Wisconsin Student Assessment System Scores Released

Thank you to all staff for your commitment to our district! Each of you reading this in the School District of Waukesha, takes seriously the opportunity and responsibility to make a positive impact on students, every, single day. I am thrilled to include our press release as part of this communication to you.
As you know, over the past two years our Board of Education has approved funding for the purchase of new curricular resources in many areas across our system. As I visit classrooms, I see evidence that our students are engaging in these standards-aligned, grade level expectations, because of your intentional planning to guarantee the academic rigor necessary for our students to be successful.
Our lagging data points are showing positive progress and achievement data shows increases across all areas. Your hard work and commitment to improving student outcomes for all students is impressive. Let’s keep this going! Together, we are making an impact!

The Department of Public Instruction has released the Spring 2022 Wisconsin Forward Exam, Dynamic Learning Maps, and ACT exam results.

The Wisconsin Forward Exam and Dynamic Learning Maps are proctored annually in the following grades and subject:
Forward Exam

  • Grades 3-8; measures performance in English language arts (ELA) and mathematics

  • Grades 4 and 8; measures performance in science

  • Grades 4, 8, and 10; measures performance in social studies

Dynamic Learning Map

  • DLM is an alternative assessment for students with the most significant cognitive disabilities in
grades 3 -11 for a continued measure of learning.

The scores below represent the Wisconsin Forward Exam and Dynamic Learning Maps data.

  • English & Language Arts (ELA) for all students on the Forward Exam and DLM for students in grades 3-8, the percentage of students proficient and advanced increased to 37.7% from 35.3% in 2020-21.

  • Math for all students in grades 3-8 on the Forward Exam and DLM, the percentage of students proficient and advanced increased to 40.3% from 37.4% in 2020-21.

  • Science for all students in grades 4 and 8 on the WI and DLM, the percentage of students proficient and advanced increased to 48.8% from 44.7% in 2020-21.

  • Social Studies is assessed in grades 4, 8 and 10. In 2020-21, the standards for social studies were changed, as a result, trend data is unavailable at the state and district level.

The School District of Waukesha scores above the state average in English Language Arts, math, and science.

ACT Scores

  • Our Average ACT Composite score for 2021-22 was the same as the state average with a score of 19.3. For the SDW this average composite is higher than our 2020-21 average composite of 18.9.

  • The ACT reports college readiness benchmark scores, a minimum score needed on an ACT subject area test to indicate a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher in corresponding credit-bearing college courses. The benchmark score for English is 18, Mathematics, 22, Reading, 22 and Science 23. Thirty-one, (31%) percentage of students in SDW met college readiness benchmark scores in three of the four subject areas.

  • Furthermore, in the SDW we proudly celebrate the 44 students who scored a 30 or higher on the ACT.

Assessment results should be used in conjunction with other data to drive school improvement. To learn more about our Key Performance Indicators, visit https://sdw.waukesha.k12.wi.us/page/kpi

AVMR Training Opportunities for 2022-2023

Welcome back to the new school year!  In the School District of Waukesha, we have been training teachers in Add+VantageMR since 2015.  During that time, many teachers have experienced the value of learning more about numeracy development in students and how to better facilitate learning. This year we will be offering AVMR Course 1, AVMR Course 2 and AVMR Fractions.  Each of these courses may be taken for no credits and a stipend of $350.00, taken for 1 credit and $175 stipend, or for 2 credits and no stipend.  These credits do count toward the new teacher credits that are required in your first few years in SDW.

All AVMR courses will be held from 4:15 - 6:45pm.  Please note that in AVMR Course 1 and Course 2, one semester will be face-to-face and one semester will be virtual.  The virtual set up for all of the AVMR classes is both synchronous and asynchronous. AVMR fractions will be a combination - some of the meetings will be virtual and others face-to-face, but the timing will be determined with the participants.

Please sign up now  to indicate your interest on the Google Form by next Friday (September 30th). If there are not at least 5 people interested in a training or course, it will be canceled so sign up now if you think you will want to take the course in the fall or spring.

Below you will also find a list of proposed TDPs centered around AVMR for the 2022-2023 school year.

AVMR Trainings:

AVMR Course 1 involves teachers learning about Add+VantageMR assessments and focusing on a continuum of learning in relation to the Learning Framework in Number.  Teachers learn to use a series of three assessments to develop a profile of number knowledge for children: number words and numerals, structuring, and addition and subtraction.  The profile then assists teachers in making informed instructional decisions to advance students' knowledge and skills.

To sign up for this course, you need to have completed AVMR Course 1.

AVMR Fractions Course

Developing Fractions Knowledge by Amy Hackenberg, Anderson Norton, and Robert Wright serves as the course text and provides a detailed and comprehensive guide to classroom and intervention teaching of fractions.  This course combines online learning with team meetings. The teaching approach for this course relies heavily on working with students and then observing and documenting students' mathematical activity and thinking.  Instructional sequences take into account detailed information about students' current levels of knowledge, as well as how students reorganize their ways of working with whole numbers in order to meaningfully work with fractions. Anyone can sign up for the Fractions course - it is recommended that you have completed AVMR Course 1 and 2 before signing up for this course, but not required.
